Labor Day

Well, on Labor Day we took our annual canoe trip down the very crooked Straight River to Grandma LaMae's house where a very delicious spread was waiting all the canoeists! I'm not sure how many groups canoed down this year, but there were five canoes in our group and several groups left earlier than us! This is my fourth time in six years -- and it's always a blast! The kids had fun, as usual, although part way down Luke informed us he did NOT like canoeing...until he found out the alternative was getting out into the river for the rest of the trip. He quickly decided he really DID like to canoe! Our nephew Steven joined us in the canoe this year, and his dad Mark (Tony's brother) let us use his canoe while they took our leaky old one. Thanks, Mark!

We saw many great sights, as usual, but didn't see the bald eagle that graced us with its presence last year. The cat tails were plentiful, as were the wild rice patches. Lots of beautiful wild flowers and high bush cranberries. We even caught a glimpse of the elusive "Wild Man of Straight River" which some attributed to folk lore...but I caught him on camera, proving he DOES exist! Hm....maybe I'll catch Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny on camera, too, perhaps even the tooth fairy!

The kids decided afterward to "canoe" home, too!

A productive day...

I'm just now getting ready to go to sleep...and have no doubt I'll nod off quickly! I was on a "canning" roll today, preserving goodies for my family during the winter. I started off yesterday with a mere 20 quarts of our own green beans (and plan to do another two bushel in a few hours after waking up) then continued today with pears -- 66 quarts of pears! 21 of spiced pears (cinnamon and clove), 21 of vanilla pears, and the rest just "plain" pears! After shelling peas along with Tony and my in-laws (and a bit of help from Luke!), I wrapped up the night canning 16 pints of peas...those will be for Tony and Luke as Susi takes after her Mama and wants nothing to do with them!

My parents recently found a second canner for me at a garage sale. It looks to be brand new! And I'll tell ya, that extra canner has made a world of difference. Now, when one batch is done processing, I can immediately start another load while the first one is depressurizing. (Yeah, those of you who aren't familiar with canning probably have no idea what I'm talking about!)

there's something so deeply satisfying in preserving food for your family for the winter. Today was just the start. I hope to can lots of tomatoes, tomato juice, spaghetti sauce, chicken soup, maybe some beef stew, and peaches before this canning season is over. And it's been a blast teaching my niece Tessa how to can as well.

Before closing, I did want to do a follow up to the Wolff family. Lowell did go home to be with Jesus Wednesday morning. Please continue to pray for their family during this time of earthly loss.

whaaaaat????

okay, so I was just checking the fox news website when I saw a hilarious and strange story. This Michigan couple was in Washington state celebrating their first anniversary and as they were driving along, a cow landed on their van. Yes, a COW! Hilarious!!!! Turns out that somehow the year-old cow fell off a cliff 200 feet above and crash landed. Egads, celebrating their first anniversary in Washington? Strange!!!! (okay, it's been years since I've been there....and it is a beautiful place)

Hunting Season

Well, today is the hunting season opener (deer, rifle) here in our area of MN. My brother Tim comes up each year, so he and Tony are out with other friends and relatives right now. Please keep them (and all hunters and those around them) in your prayers...and also, that they get lots of deer! I don't want them going after my flowers and the farm garden again next year! (the deer, that is...)
